OpenAlex Publication Discovery and Repository Enrichment Toolkit

The **OpenAlex Publication Discovery and Repository Enrichment Toolkit** is an open-source Python workflow developed at the University of Kent to support institutional repository population and metadata maintenance using OpenAlex.

Originally developed in response to the retirement of Jisc Publications Router, the toolkit evolved into a broader workflow for discovering new scholarly outputs, identifying opportunities to enrich existing repository records, and supporting repository management through structured reporting and RIS export.

The toolkit queries OpenAlex for new institutional research outputs and compares the results against a periodically exported repository snapshot rather than relying on live repository searches. It identifies genuinely new publications for repository import, detects existing records that could benefit from additional metadata such as DOI, volume, issue and page numbers, and produces reports highlighting records requiring manual review.

The workflow supports journal articles, books, book chapters and datasets, while maintaining a complete audit trail through logs and archived OpenAlex metadata. It has been developed and validated using live University of Kent repository data and has been designed so that institution-specific settings can be adapted for use by other organisations using EPrints or similar repository platforms.
